A spell has a set amount of uses, before it is depleted, but resting at a will fully replenish it. The thing is, I have yet to see someone fire it off on a character not spec'd to the max to abuse it. I was trying to find that stupid bonfire at the very bottom of the swamp near the boss, but I got completely lost, and ended up dying after getting poisoned and then surrounded by a couple of those slug things. If you have a ranged attack like Pyromancy, spells, or the Great Lightning Spear as we did , you can use them sparingly if Manus gets distracted by Sif. The lack of skill is astounding. For me I don't think it's significantly better than Dark Souls 3. Now on most bosses a Crystal spear will do anywhere from 700 - 1 100 damage. Because of it's weight, great scaling, and wonderful moveset I'd say the great scythe is a head of the pack in terms of relative strength.
I'm going to roll with dexterity to make my spell casting faster, so most likely I'll roll with a dex weapon with good bleeding damage. It is wonderful to play this to git gud at Dark Souls, and it's so rewarding if you do. It's just not fun chasing around abusers of cheap magic while dodging their spells that can one-shot me if timed properly.
